★ for（in favour of; in support of; in agreement with; in defense of : pp.087-088)
"There is much to be said for it."（そのものを擁護して言うべきことがいろいろある）という文のなかの"for"は"against"の反対、即ち、「賛成」や「支持」を意味している。この一文を「それにはいろいろ言うことがある」や「それにはいろいろ文句がある」と誤訳する人がいる。
一番いけないのは、「～に対して」とか、「～のために」という訳語で"for"を片付けてしまうことである。
"I have no use for you."の意味するものは謙遜（「私はあなたの役に立ちません」）でも皮肉でもなく、かなり露骨な反感の表示であると受け取らなければならない。この文は、"I have no time for you."とか、"I am not going to waste my breath on you."という強い表現に置き換えることができるからである。つまり、「あなたのために時間を費やすのはごめんだ」という意思表示である。
Ｒ英単語・熟語集の用例とはできるだけ重複しないようにしますが、用例が少ない場合はどうしても重複してしまいます。あしからず。
