第11章 知識の理論
1914年8月から1917年の終りまで、私は自分が戦争に反対したことから生じた諸問題に没頭していたが、1918年始めには、平和主義者として有益にできる仕事はこれ以上（まったく）ないと信ずるようになっていた。以前に執筆することを約束していた『自由への道』と名付けられた本をできるだけ早く書き上げたが、それが私の手を離れると、私はふたたび哲学の問題の仕事（研究）を始めた。私は、前章の中で、私が刑務所に入る直前に書き終えた、論理的原子論についての講演（の内容）について取り扱った。刑務所の中で、私は J. デューイに対する攻撃的な批評(a polemical criticism)を書き、ついで『数理哲学入門』を書いた。その後、私の考えは、知識論（知識の理論）と心理学や言語学のなかで知識論に関連すると思われる部分に向っていることに気づいた。これは、私の哲学的関心におけるいくらか永続的な変化であった。その結果は、私自身の考えだけについていえば、次の３冊の書物に示されている。即ち、『精神の分析』（1921年）。『意味と真理の探究』（1940年）。『人間の知識、その範囲と限界』（1948年）。

From August 1914 until the end of 1917 I was wholly occupied with matters arising out of my opposition to the war, but by the beginning of 1918 I had become persuaded that there was no further pacifist work that I could usefully do. I wrote as quickly as I could a book, which I had contracted to produce, called Roads to Freedom, but when that was out of the way I began again to work at philosophical subjects. I have dealt in the preceding chapter with the lectures on Logical Atomism which I finished just before going to prison. In prison, I wrote first a polemical criticism of Dewey and then the Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy. After this I found my thoughts turning to theory of knowledge and to those parts of psychology and of linguistics which seemed relevant to that subject. This was a more or less permanent change in my philosophical interests. The outcome, so far as my own thinking was concerned, is embodied in three books: The Analysis of Mind (l92l); An Inquiry into Meaning and Truth (1940); Human Knozdedge: Its Scope and Limits (1948).
