親は子供のこととの関連で（念頭において）行動しなければならないが，子供は自分自身と自分の外の世界との関連で行動しなければならない。ここが本質的に違うところである。子供は，親との関連で果たすべき重要な役割をまったく持っていない。子供の役割は，知恵と身体において成長することであり，子供がそのように成長している限り，健全な親の本能は満足するのである。
The parent must act with reference to the child, but the child must act with reference to himself and the outer world. That is the essential difference. The child has no important function to perform in relation to his parents. His function is to grow in wisdom and stature, and so long as he does so a healthy parental instinct is satisfied.
