恐怖（心）なしに育てられた子供は,正直であるはずであるが,それは,道徳的に努力しているからではなく,誠実（正直）である以外の考えが頭に浮かんでこないだけのことであろう。賢明に,かつ親切に取り扱われてきた子供は,卒直なまなざしをしており,知らない人に対しても,ものおじしない態度をとる。
The child brought up without fear will be truthful, not in virtue of a moral effort, but because it will never occur to him to be otherwise. The child who has been treated wisely and kindly has a frank look in the eyes, and a fearless demeanour even with strangers.

良きにつけ悪きにつけ、子どもは親に似てしまう。良い点が似るのはよいが、往々にして、悪いことでも、親がやっているのだからと、「免罪符」を得たかのように思ってやってしまう。 子どもが嘘をよくつくのも、やはり親が何らかの形で嘘をつくのを子どもが目撃した結果であることが多いであろう。
