私たちは,慣れと欲望（欲求）のために,新しい真理を受けつけなくなる。長年固く信じてきたこと,あるいは自尊心やその他根本的な感情を満足させるものを疑うことは,難しい。それゆえ,開かれた知性（偏見のない心）こそは,教育が生み出すことを目指すべき性質の一つでなければならない。
We become impervious to new truth both from habit and from desire; we find it hard to disbelieve what we have emphatically believed for a number of years, and also what ministers to self-esteem or any other fundamental passion. Open-mindedness should therefore be one of the qualities that education aims at producing.

知的にも精神的にも，死ぬまで成長したいと思えば，「開かれた知性」（open-mindness）は必須のもの。権威によりかかるものにはそういうった心性は見られない。
