子供は'ごまかし'を嫌うが,通常,そのような気持ちは年をとれば消滅する。(従って)子供に不快な真実を知らせない慣行は,決して大人たちが考えるように子供たちのために採用されたのでない。それは大人にとって卒直さが苦痛であるがゆえに採用されるのである。

 <寸言>
 子供にはありのままの事実をしらせない方が「子供のためだ」ということで,子供を過保護にすると多くの弊害が生じます。日本の歴史教育は良い(というか)「悪い」例です。「社会が不快な事実を知らぬままですまそうとする結果はやがて社会全体の災厄を招く破目になろう」というラッセルの警告は,拝聴すべきものだと思われます。
