リーダーシップというものは相対的なものである。シーザーはアントニーを従わせることができたが，他の誰もそれをできなかった。ほとんどの人は，政治は難しいものだと感じ，指導者に従ったほうがよいと感じる。彼らは，本能的に，また無意識に，そう感じる。犬がご主人様（飼い主）に感じるのと同じである。
Leadership is relative : Caesar could make Antony obey him, but no one else could. Most people feel that politics is difficult, and that they had better follow a leader-- they feel this instinctively and unconsciously, as dogs do with their masters.

トランプ大統領は、自分こそが世界を導く政治的リーダーだと信じて疑わないようです。しかし、リーダーシップと力による支配とは異なります。トランプは、自分の背後に世界を支配できるアメリカの富と軍事力があるからこそ、大きな影響力をふるうことができています。たとえば、トランプがイギリスや北欧に生まれていたら、無視され、誇大妄想狂扱いされるのが落ちです。 トランプの「リーダーシップ」には、国家の力を背景にした支配的性格が色濃く表れています。こうした力の構造のなかで、日本をはじめとする他国はアメリカにどう向き合っていったらよいでしょうか？ 犬は飼い主（ご主人様）に忠実ですが、アメリカは日本の猟犬か、番犬か、それとも、家の中を自由に動き回れる愛犬でしょうか？ アメリカから日々経済的利益を得ている方々ならアメリカは番犬であり愛犬でありそうです。一方、吠えられる人々には、アメリカは野犬（オオカミの一種）に映ることでしょう。（笑）
President Trump appears to firmly believe that he is the political leader destined to guide the world. However, leadership is not the same as rule through power. Trump's influence stems from the fact that he is backed by America's wealth and military might, which together hold sway over the world. Had he been born in Britain or Scandinavia, he likely would have been ignored and dismissed as a delusional egotist.
Trump's so-called "leadership" clearly reflects a dominant character, heavily reliant on the power of the state behind him. Given such a power structure, how should countries like Japan relate to the United States?
Dogs are loyal to their masters, but what kind of dog is America to Japan? A hunting dog? A guard dog? Or perhaps a beloved pet free to roam inside the house? For those who benefit economically from America on a daily basis, it may seem like both a loyal guard dog and a cherished companion. But for those who are barked at, America might appear more like a wild dog, or perhaps a kind of wolf.
