知的な人々の懐疑主義は彼らの無力の原因であり、それ自体、彼らの怠惰の結果である。もし、何もする価値がないのなら、それはじっとしている言い訳を与える。しかし、災難が差し迫っている時には、座視し続けるいかなる言い訳も根拠を持たない。知的な人々は懐疑主義を捨てるか、そうでなければ、誰もが嘆き悲しんでいる悪に対する責任を共有しなければならないだろう。
The scepticism of the intelligent is the cause of their impotence, and is itself the effect of their laziness : if there is nothing worth doing, that gives an excuse for sitting still. But when disaster is impending, no excuse for sitting still can be valid. The intelligent will have to shed their scepticism, or share responsibility for the evils which all deplore.

＜寸言＞
まさか、岸田総理が知的な人々（the intelligent）の一人だと思った人はいないと思いますが、最後の一文を誤読した人はいそうです。「The intelligent will have to shed their scepticism, or share responsibility for the evils which all deplore.」の文章で、「will have to」はもちろん、「shed」と「share」の両方にかかります。日本は（岸田総理も）米国の行為は、よくないと思っても、非難することができません。また、米国がイスラエルを支持している限り、イスラエルの行き過ぎた行為を厳しく非難することもできません。それが日本の基本的なスタンスですので、それに従っている限り、岸田総理も「脳内平和」を保つことができます。この人には惻隠の情などというものはなく、権力を維持し続けることが最大の目的のようです。
