人間が人間としての自尊心（self-esteem）を扱うことはなおいっそう困難である。 なぜなら私達は何らかの人間でない精神（例：地球外の高等生命の精神/知性）でこの問題を徹底的に論じることができないからである。この一般的な人間のうぬぼれを扱う私の知っている唯一の方法は、人間（に関すること）は、宇宙の片隅の小さな惑星の生命における一つの短いエピソードにすぎないこと、そうして、詳しいことはわからないが（for aught we know）、宇宙の他の部分には、私達がクラゲよりもすぐれているのと同様に、私達よりも優れた存在（注：彼らからみれば人類はクラゲ程度）を含んでいるかもしれない（可能性がある）ということを自分に言い聞かせる（remind ourselves）ことである。
It is more difficult to deal with the self-esteem of man as man, because we cannot argue out the matter with some non-human mind. The only way I know of dealing with this general human conceit is to remind ourselves that man is a brief episode in the life of a small planet in a little corner of the universe, and that, for aught we know, other parts of the cosmos may contain beings as superior to ourselves as we are to jellyfish.

よく行われる方法は宗教に逃げるやり方です。
しかし、宗教はいろいろあるだけでなく、同じ宗教でもセクトも多くあることから、争いをやわらげるどころか、争いをますますひどくしてしまいます。「信じる者は救われる」どころか、「強く信じる者（狂信者）」は争いを過酷にし、「他人（自分と違う信仰や信念を持つ人々）を不幸にする」ばかりです。
