[A reply to a letter seeking support for imprisoned leaders of the Negro people of Harlem, March 31, 1965]
「私は、ハーレムの虐げられた黒人のために声をあげる人々に対する,ニューヨークにおける衝撃的な迫害を、心から非難します。・・・。 （ハーレムの）住民は、つねに警察や貧困や屈辱（indignity）によって、生活のあらゆる瞬間に、残忍な扱いを受けています。・・・。
これらの暴動を扇動したということでアメリカの急進派（の人々）を起訴することほど、アメリカにおける抑圧の手を明確に示すものは（他に）ありません。・・・。ハーレムにおける何十年にも及び悲惨な状況に対して責任を負わなければならない人達が、彼らの間違った行為に対して抗議する情熱的な人々を起訴するのです。
・・・。もし私が（今）ニューヨークにいたら、ニューヨーク州政府を転覆しようとした罪に問われることは確実でしょう。・・・」
[.. I wholeheartedly condemn the shocking persecution in New York of those who speak up on behalf of the oppressed Negroes of Harlem. ... Its inhabitants are brutalised at every moment of their lives by police, poverty and indignity. ... Nothing more clearly indicates the hand of oppression in America than the indictment of American radicals for having instigated these riots. ... The very people responsible for the decades of misery in Harlem indict the passionate opponents of their practice. ... Were I in New York I should certainly be guilty of trying to overthrow the Government of the State of New York.]

＜寸言＞
現在では、ニューヨークのハーレムはかなり綺麗な街になっていると時々TVで紹介されます。しかし、現在でも人種差別は残っており、米国の警官が黒人を不当に逮捕したり殺害したりするニュースが時々報道されています。いずれ、米国の白人が人口の半数以下になることは目に見えており、そうなれば大分状況が改善されることが期待されます。
