Newton's work caused men to believe that God had originally created nature and decreed nature's laws so as to produce the results that He intended without fresh intervention, except on great occasions, such as the revelation of the Christian religion....
And as the belief in miraculous interference with the course of nature died out, the belief in the possibility of witchcraft necessarily also disappeared.

この宇宙はどうしてできたのか、今あるような自然法則はどうして存在しているのか、と問う信心深い人は、世界創造の原因として、神様が存在するはずだと考えてしまいます。そうではなく、世界（この宇宙）は創造されたのではなく、最初から存在していたとは考えられないでしょうか？
