私たちはみな,不当に興奮したり,不当に緊張したり,自分たちの住んでいる世界の片隅や,生と死の間のほんの一瞬の時間の重要性を不当に買いかぶる傾向がある。こうした興奮や私たち自身の重要性の過大評価には,望ましいものは何もない。実際,それは,私たちをもっと懸命に働かせるかもしれないが,もっと'良く'働かせはしないだろう。
We are all inclined to get unduly excited, unduly strained, unduly impressed with the importance of the little corner of the world in which we live, and of the little moment of time comprised between our birth and death. In this excitement and over-estimation of our own importance there is nothing desirable. True, it may make us work harder, but it will not make us work better.

＜寸言＞
どのような時代でも自分が生きている時代は特別な時代ではあるが、客観的に見れば、我々がそう考えるほど「画期的な時代」とは言えない。長い宇宙や地球の歴史からみれば、たった100年ほどの間に、宇宙的な、大きな出来事が起こるはずはない。もちろん、人間にとっては大きなことは起こるであろうが、「不当に」評価しないほうが人間にとってもよいことであろう。
