ベンサム主義(功利主義)の歴史家のエリー・アレヴィ（故人）は，かつて，おおざっぱに言って，人が自分の仕事に対して支払われる報酬（収入額）は，その人が自分の仕事がどれだけの価値があるかと考えているもの（自己評価額）とちょうど同じであると主張した。私は，この言葉は著作家の場合は当てはまらないと確信を持っている。私の場合は，ある本が価値があると思えば思うほど，支払われる報酬は少ないということを，これまで常に気づいている。
Per contra, the late Elie Halevy, the historian of Benthamism, once maintained that, broadly speaking, what a man is paid for his work is what he himself believes it to be worth. I am sure this is not true of authors: I have always found, in my own case, that the more I thought a book was worth, the less I was paid for it.
