非常に多くの現代の結婚において，子供は男性の欲求に対する女性の側の譲歩にほかならない。結局，女性は子供を生むためには出産と陣痛と美しさの喪失に直面しなければならないが，男性にはそういう心配をする理由がない。
In a very large number of modern marriages, the children are a concession on the part of the woman to the man's desires. A woman, after all, has to face labour and pain and possible loss of beauty in order to bring a child into the world, whereas a man has no such grounds for anxiety.

男性には結婚によって容貌が悪くも良くもならないが、「自由」は確実に減る。もちろん、「自由」が広がる面もなくはないが・・・。
