 まったく近代になって、即ち、ほぼフランス革命の頃から以降、結婚はロマンチックな恋愛(注:身分・地位・貧富の格差などが影響しない純粋な恋愛感情)の結果であるべきであるという考えが強まってきた。大部分の現代人は、少なくとも英語を話す国々においては、それは当然のこととし、つい先ごろまでそれが革命的に新しい考えであったことはまったく知らない。

In quite modern times, that is to say, since about the period of the French Revolution, an idea has grown up that marriage should be the outcome of romantic love. Most moderns, at any rate in English-speaking countries, take this for granted, and have no idea that not long ago it was a revolutionary innovation.
