 戦前,女性に投票権(選挙権)を与えることに反対して主張された議論の中の一つは,女性は平和主義者になりがちだ(注:つまり,戦争の時に戦わない)というものであった。大戦中,女性は,この非難に対して大々的に反駁してみせた。そこで,血なまぐさい仕事を分担したご褒美として投票権が女性に与えられたのである(注:半分皮肉)。

This situation, of course, reached its height during the war, when a very large part of the work usually performed by men had to be undertaken by women. Before the war one of the objections commonly urged against votes for women was that women would tend to be pacifists. During the war they gave a large-scale refutation of this charge, and the vote was given to them for their share in the bloody work.
