Bertrand Russell Quotes

On the whole, freedom of choice as to how to spend money is a source of pleasure -- affection for one's own furniture, for example, is a very strong and very wide-spread emotion, which would not exist if the State supplied us all with furnished apartments.

I once saw a television program showing Kim Jong-un, the Supreme Leader of North Korea, providing fully furnished apartments to all residents in Pyongyang. While many so-called "elite citizens" may be pleased to receive such comfortable housing from the state, the vast majority of North Koreans still live in poverty. Moreover, when the furniture is assigned rather than chosen, the sense of attachment and joy is greatly diminished.
Setting aside the case of North Korea, even children tend to dislike things that are forced upon them by their parents, they want to make their own choices. If they have chosen something themselves, they are more likely to accept the outcome, even if it doesn't turn out well. And if they truly don't like it, they'll make an effort to find something better.
Such is the importance of freedom for human beings.
