The value of philosophy is partly in relation to thought and partly in relation to feeling, though its effects in these two ways are closely interconnected. On the theoretical side it is a help in understanding the universe as a whole, in so far as this is possible. On the side of feeling it is a help toward a just appreciation of the ends of human life.

* a brief comment:
Whether we accept reality or reject it, we must first understand what it is?accurately or at least appropriately. However, many people tend to see things through the filter of their own desires.
The image on the left side of the "Russell's Words for Today" attachment is probably familiar to most of you. If you see the protrusion on the left as an ear, the illustration appears to be a rabbit; if you see it as a beak, it looks like a duck.
With calm and objective thinking, one can recognize the possibility of seeing it either way. But when certain emotions or moods dominate, it likely appears as either a rabbit or a duck.
As Russell says, philosophy not only helps us see things as appropriately as possible, but also assists us in developing an attitude that is not swayed by passing emotions. Perhaps this example can help us appreciate that point.
