Bertrand Russell Quotes

The whole philosophy of economic nationalism, which is now universal throughout the world, is based upon the false belief that the economic interest of one nation is necessarily opposed to that of another. This false belief, by producing international hatreds and rivalries, is a cause of war, and in this way tends to make itself true, since when war has once broken out the conflict of national interests becomes only too real.」

* a brief comment:
The United States, which has long been a leader in the global economy, has increasingly embraced economic nationalism since the Trump administration. With slogans like "America First" and MEGA (Make America Great Again), the country is attempting to foster prosperity through deals, backed by its position as the world's leading economic and military power.
A "deal" based on equal footing wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, but the "deals" Trump engages in are rooted in the logic of a great power?namely, the principle that "might makes right," where the strong impose their will.
The unfavorable consequences of Trump's policies --such as imposing high tariffs on various countries-- are likely to become clear only after his administration ends. However, by the time this is understood, the American public will likely experience a decline in the United States’ global standing. The business world tends to be more sensitive to changes in the times than the political sphere. While Japanese politicians seem unlikely to break free from their tendency to follow the U.S., will Japan’s business sector be able to reduce its dependence on America and manage a soft landing?
