If we were all given by magic the power to read each other's thoughts I suppose the first effect would be that almost all friendships would be dissolved; the second effect, however, might be excellent, for a world without any friends would be felt to be intolerable, and we should learn to like each other without needing a veil of illusion to conceal from ourselves that we did not think each other absolutely perfect.

 It may be difficult to ‘like each other’, but it does not seem to be so difficult to ‘not hate each other’. This is because if the other party has the ability to read each other's thoughts, then both parties are forced to be humble.
 Unfortunately, however, the reality is that there are many politicians and high-level bureaucrats who do not admit their own faults. They think this because they have the confidence or vanity to believe that their true feelings cannot be known.
