What Russell is referring to here as ‘something that transcends the self’ is not a monotheistic ‘god’ (such as Jesus in Christianity). As in Einstein's case, it is a cosmic religious sentiment. In view of the vastness of the universe, a human being is like a tiny speck of dust, but it is a wonder that such a tiny person can even imagine this vast universe... and so on.
