I remember trying to make her see that it was inconsistent to demand at one and the same time that everybody should be well housed, and yet that no new houses should be built because they were an eye-sore. To her each sentiment had its separate rights, and must not be asked to give place to another sentiment on account of anything so cold as mere logic.

* a brief comment
During parliamentary questioning, then Prime Minister Shinzo Abe repeatedly stated that such a thing did not exist, and was challenged by opposition parties to prove that it did not exist if he asserted that it did not. Prime Minister Abe responded with the following response. "If you look for something and find it and point to it, you can prove that it exists, but you can't prove that it doesn't exist by pointing to it. That is devil's proof!’" This must have been an argument taught to him by someone in his entourage, but it was not something he really learned, so later, on another occasion, Prime Minister Abe responded to a certain opposition party member who kept denying something, saying, ‘Then prove that it is not there’. There are many politicians who are full of knowledge but have this level of logical thinking skills. The same is unfortunately true for Koizumi Shinjiro, one of the leading candidates for the next Prime Minister and a popular figure among the public. It seems that logical thinking skills are not so important to many citizens.
