Before the First World War this idea was advocated in somewhat different forms by syndicalists in France and by guild Socialists in England, but the Russian Revolution captured their imaginations and they went helter-skelter for State Socialism, and bureaucratic autocracy. They thought, rather foolishly, that if the bureaucrats were former rebels would be well. The result was not only Russian autocracy, but also complete failure of movements of the Left the West to stand for things that they had formerly valued. It time revive the aims which progressive people set before themselves in the days before the Russian Revolution.
