For a number of years Mrs Webb was addicted to fasting, from motives partly hygienic and partly religious.... When they and I were staying at a hotel in Normandy, she used to stay upstairs in the mornings since she could not bear the painful spectacle of us breakfasting. Sidney, however, would come down for rolls and coffee. The first morning Mrs Webb sent a message by the maid, 'We do not have butter for Sidney's breakfast'. Her use of 'we' was one of the delights of their friends.
