I think perhaps, even now, the neighbouring gentry might have some difficulty in welcoming an ardent young Communist who had been sent down from Oxford for atheism and excluded from decent society for preaching free love. But in our degenerate days the gentry are not what they were and the doctrine that virtue is proportional to income has become unfashionable.
