Dear Mr Dowling,(July 25, 1960)
Thank you very much for sending me your very interesting investigation of the attack on Shelley at Tanyrallt. Ever since, as an adolescent, I became interested in Shelley, this story has intrigued me, and now that I live in full view of Tanyrallt my interest has received a fresh stimulus. I am quite persuaded by your reconstruction and I congratulate you on unearthing the man Lesson. I did not know that already then there was a peer
'... who brews
a lordlier liquor than the Muse.'
I think perhaps, even now, the neighbouring gentry might have some difficulty in welcoming an ardent young Communist who had been sent down from Oxford for atheism and excluded from decent society for preaching free love. But in our degenerate days the gentry are not what they were and the doctrine that virtue is proportional to income has become unfashionable.
