Pembroke Lodge, where my grandfather lived, was a house in the middle of Richmond Park about ten miles from the center of London. It was in the gift of the Queen, and was given by her to my grandfather for his lifetime and that of my grandmother.... In this house I met Queen Victoria when I was two years old. .. the rambling Victorian house, now no longer in the gift of the sovereign, but turned into a tea shop; the garden, formerly full of nooks and crannies in which a child could hide, but now wide open to the general public.
