Once in the year 1904, when I was living in an isolated cottage in a vast moor without roads, he ( = Keyens) wrote and asked if I could promise him a restful weekend. I replied confidently in the affirmative, and he came. Within five minutes of his arrival the Vice Chancellor turned up full of University business. Other people came unexpectedly to every meal, including six to Sunday breakfast. By Monday morning we had had twenty-six unexpected guests, and Keynes, I fear, went away more tired than he came.
