寸言：AIロボットが家族となる時代？ - 「家族」という言葉一つとっても…
言葉の意味やニュアンスは、時代や使う人、あるいはその場の状況（TPO）によって刻々と変化するため、非常に厄介です。 例えば、バートランド・ラッセルの次の一文を見てみましょう。
「人を晩婚へと向かわせる動機も、家族の制限へと向かわせる動機も、同一のものである。（晩婚化へと向かわせるのと同じ動機が、家族の数を制限することにもつながっている）。」 （The same motives which lead men to marry late also lead them to limit their families.）
この一文自体は理解しやすく、現代の私たちにも通じる感覚でしょう。しかし、書かれた当時の時代背景を離れてこの「家族」という言葉を眺めてみると、実に多様な解釈が可能になります。
かつて「家族」といえば、男女のペアを基本とし、そこに子供や祖父母が加わる形が一般的でした。しかし現在では、同性パートナーやさまざまなジェンダー・アイデンティティを持つ人々のユニット、あるいは拡大家族もその範疇に含まれるようになっています。中には、血の繋がった親族よりも愛犬を「真の家族」と考える人さえいます。
さらに今後、人間のような感覚器官を備えたAIロボットが登場すれば、「家族」の境界線はもっと曖昧に、そして広くなっていくはずです。
決まった価値観の中にいれば、こうした変化を意識することはないかもしれません。しかし、世界中の多様な価値観に触れ、日常的にAIと対話を続けるような人にとって、こうした「家族観の変容」は、ごく自然で切実な実感として立ち上がってくるのではないでしょうか。
Short Essay: Will AI Robots Become Our Family? ? The Evolution of the Word "Family"
The meaning and nuance of a word can be quite tricky. They shift with the times, the person speaking, and the specific context?the "time, place, and occasion." Take, for instance, this sentence by Bertrand Russell:
"The same motives which lead men to marry late also lead them to limit their families." (Source: Principles of Social Reconstruction, 1916, p.121)
At first glance, this sentence is relatively easy to grasp. Even today, most of us can intuitively understand the logic and sentiment behind it. However, if we step away from Russell’s original intent and ignore the historical context of 1916, we find ourselves open to a vast array of interpretations.
One reason for this is the diversification of the word "family" itself. Traditionally, a "family" was presumed to be a unit based on a male-female pair, sometimes including children, grandparents, or siblings.
Today, however, the concept has evolved. It now encompasses same-sex couples, individuals with diverse gender identities, and various forms of extended families. Some people even consider their beloved dogs to be more of a "real family" than their own relatives.>
As we look toward the future, the emergence of AI robots equipped with human-like sensory organs will likely broaden the scope of "family" even further.
If one only interacts with people who share identical views and lifestyles, these shifts might go unnoticed. But for those who engage with diverse cultures across the globe and maintain a daily dialogue with AI, these reflections on the changing nature of family likely feel like a natural, even inevitable, realization.
