どの分野においても、真理を追究したり、社会をより良くしようとしたりする誠実な情熱よりも、権力や富の獲得に心を奪われている人々が少なからず存在すると、ラッセルは指摘しています。
この傾向は、単に政治の世界に限ったものではありません。学問や文学、芸術の領域においてさえも、他者の承認や支配力を求める欲望が、創造的探究心や良心を圧倒してしまうことがあります。
多くの人は、権威主義国家の指導者の名をすぐ思い浮かべるかもしれません。しかし、ラッセルの言葉は、実は私たち自身の社会にも向けられています。日本を含む西側諸国においても、表面上は理性的で立派に見えながら、その実、権力と富を追い求める衝動に支配されている「狂気じみた人々」は決して少なくありません。

Russell points out that in every field, there are not a few people who are more captivated by the pursuit of power and wealth than inspired by a sincere passion for truth or the improvement of society.
This tendency is by no means confined to the realm of politics. Even in the domains of scholarship, literature, and art, the desire for recognition or dominance over others can at times overwhelm genuine curiosity and moral conscience.
Many may immediately think of the names of authoritarian leaders, yet Russell's words are, in fact, directed also at our own societies. Even in the Western nations, including Japan, there are quite a few people who, while appearing rational and respectable on the surface, are in reality driven by an obsessive impulse toward power and wealth.
They are often celebrated as successful figures and even admired by others; but in Russell's eyes, it is precisely such "success" that symbolizes the precariousness of modern civilization.
