＜寸言＞
日本人は集団的行動に長けており、多くの国民の基本的な考え方は似通っているように見えます。しかし、日本には１億以上の人々が暮しており、国土も北から南まで2000km以上に広がっています。そのため、同じような感性をもっているように思っていても、実際には意外な違いに気づかされて驚くことが少なくありません。
国内に限ってさえそうですから、他国の人々の考え方や発想を正しく理解することがいかに難しいかは、容易に想像できます。
海外旅行が趣味で「自分は50カ国以上訪れた」と自慢する人が時々います。なかには経済的に恵まれていて、「観光地を駆け回るのではなく、１，２カ所に絞ってゆったりと休暇を過ごす」と、旅行慣れしていることや生活の余裕をそれとなく自慢気に語る人もいます。実際、現地の生活を自分の目で見ることは理解を深める助けになります。しかし、民族や社会の精神性を理解するには、それらについて書かれた本を熟読するほうが役立つ場合もかなりあります。
いずれにせよ、海外を多く見て回ることは理解を促進する大きな機会です。ですから、そうした自慢話に対しては、批判したり張り合ったりするのではなく、「優雅でいいですね」と軽く羨ましがりながら相槌を打ち、上手に聞き流すのが賢明かも知れません。
The Japanese are skilled in collective behavior, and the basic ways of thinking of many citizens appear to be similar. However, more than one hundred million people live in Japan, and the country stretches over 2,000 kilometers from north to south. For that reason, even when we assume that we share similar sensibilities, we are often surprised to discover unexpected differences.
If this is the case even within our own country, it is easy to imagine how difficult it must be to correctly understand the ways of thinking and ideas of people in other nations.
There are sometimes people who boast that they have visited more than fifty countries as a hobby. Among them are those who are economically well-off and say, in a somewhat self-satisfied way, "Rather than rushing around tourist spots, I choose one or two places and spend my vacation there at leisure," thereby hinting at both their travel experience and their comfortable lifestyle. Indeed, seeing local life with one's own eyes can certainly help deepen understanding. However, when it comes to grasping the spiritual character of a people or society, carefully reading books written about them is often even more useful.
In any case, traveling widely abroad provides a great opportunity to broaden one's understanding. Therefore, when faced with such boasts, it may be wiser not to criticize or try to compete, but instead to respond with a light "How elegant!" while showing a touch of envy, and then let the conversation pass smoothly.
