The Folly of Competitive Eating ? Remembering the Spirit of "Moderation" Our feelings toward "big eaters" change depending on the time and place. For instance, it is only natural for parents to feel joy seeing their growing children eat heartily. However, I cannot bring myself to enjoy the spectacle of "competitive eating" in public, seemingly for the sake of showing off to others.
Television programs, driven by a desire for high ratings, often praise gluttony as a form of "virtue" or "entertainment." Whenever such scenes suddenly appear on screen, I find myself wanting to change the channel immediately.
Looking at the world, there are still many people suffering from hunger. Even within Japan, many households are struggling with rising food costs and a high Engel’s coefficient. In an era where the scarcity and value of food are so significant, I cannot wholeheartedly enjoy seeing food treated as a mere "tool" for competition.
Furthermore, there are serious social concerns. Excessive overeating carries significant health risks. Promoting this as something "admirable" on broadcast television could lead viewers?especially children?to mimic such behavior, potentially resulting in accidents or poor health. In an age where food loss is a major global challenge, wasting precious resources in this manner feels painfully out of step with the times.
If people wish to enjoy eating large quantities, I believe they should do so privately, perhaps among family or close friends. If kept within a private circle, there would be no reason for others to criticize it.
No matter how much someone loves to eat, once they pass the point of fullness, they are merely eating out of inertia. In that moment, the true "deliciousness" and "gratitude for food" seem to vanish. The genre of competitive eating belongs not on general television (with the exception of specialized food channels), but rather on social media or within communities of like-minded enthusiasts.
It may be a cliche, but the proverb "Too much is as bad as too little" feels incredibly profound when we consider the proper way to treat food. What are your thoughts on modern food-related entertainment?
