Personal conceit is dispelled by brothers, family conceit by schoolfellows, class conceit by politics, national conceit by defeat in war or commerce. But human conceit remains, and in this region, so far as the effect of social intercourse is concerned, the myth-making faculty has free play.

a brief comment
s today's "Words of Russell," I would like to introduce the following passage from Sceptical Essays (1928):
"Individual conceit is dispelled by brothers, family conceit by schoolfellows, class conceit by politics, and national conceit by defeats in war or commerce. But human conceit remains undispelled; from the point of view of social intercourse, the power of myth-making is freely exercised."
Now, what if we apply Russell's words to Donald Trump? Trump's conceit has not been dispelled even by his four siblings, the Trump family's conceit was not dispelled by schoolfellows, and the conceit of those who chant "America First" also seems to remain, since America, being the world's greatest military and economic power, has little opportunity to be corrected by defeat. Russell's words strike me as a sharp observation, but at least in Trump's case, they seem unlikely ever to reach his ears.
What do you think?
