The fact is that optimism is pleasant so long as it is credible, but when it is not, it is intensely irritating. Especially irritating is the optimism about our own troubles which is displayed by those who do not have to share them. Optimism about other people's troubles is a very risky business unless it goes with quite concrete proposals as to how to make the troubles disappear or grow less.

a brief comment
Politicians who are outspoken and assertive tend to be favored. Of course, that is only when voters feel such politicians' views and style match their own preferences; if they feel the opposite, they will turn against them.
The LDP presidential election is scheduled for October 4, with five candidates running. At present, media reports suggest that Shinjiro Koizumi is slightly in the lead. In the past, the president of the LDP was virtually guaranteed to become prime minister, but now that the LDP is a minority party, winning the presidency does not necessarily mean being chosen as prime minister.
Unfortunately for Koizumi, the weekly magazine Shukan Bunshun reported that members of his campaign staff had asked supporters to post favorable comments about him on online videos, and at a press conference after the Cabinet meeting on the 26th, Koizumi admitted the report was true.
If further scandals come to light, Koizumi may not even remain a viable candidate, so he has shifted to a "cautious mode," with his usual vigor all but gone.
Among the candidates, Yoshimasa Hayashi seems the most moderate and capable, but he is unpopular with the conservative base of the LDP. Two of the five candidates will advance to a runoff. If it comes down to Koizumi versus Hayashi, Koizumi would likely win; if it is Takaichi versus Hayashi, then Hayashi would likely prevail.
Since both Koizumi and Takaichi show instability in their statements and positions, I believe Yoshimasa Hayashi would be the best choice. What about you -- which candidate do you support?
