老いと死の恐怖
老人のなかには死の恐怖で憂鬱になる者もいる。若い人の場合は,この感情を正当化できるものがある。戦闘(戦争)で殺される恐れを抱く理由のある若者は,人生が提供する最良のものを騙しとられているという思いで,苦々しく感じるのも,もっともであろう。しかし,人間の喜びと悲しみを知り,何であれ自分のなすべきことを全てなしとげた老人の場合には,死の恐怖を観ずることはいくらか卑しく恥ずべきことである。Some old people are oppressed by the fear of death. In the young there is a justification for this feeling. Young men who have reason to fear that they will be killed in battle may justifiably feel bitter in the thought that they have been cheated of the best things that life has to offer. But in an old man who has known human joys and sorrows, and has achieved whatever work it was in him to do, the fear of death is somewhat abject and ignoble.
