芸術家や文学者は、結婚生活が不幸であることが職業柄必要（礼儀上必要）だと考えているが、科学者はしばしば、いまだに'古風な家庭生活の幸福'が可能である。その理由は、彼ら科学者の知性の高級な部分はすべて仕事に吸収されてしまっており、彼らが果たすべき役割のない領域に踏みこむことは許されないからである（注：半分冗談ですよ）。（出典： ラッセル『幸福論』第10章「幸福はいまでも可能か？」）Artists and literary men consider it de rigueur to be unhappy in their marriages, but men of science quite frequently remain capable of old-fashioned domestic bliss. The reason for this is that the higher parts of their intelligence are wholly absorbed by their work, and are not allowed to intrude into regions where they have no functions to perform.
