人間性についての私の考え（理解）も一変した。ピューリタニズム（清教徒主義）は人間の幸福のためになるものではない,と初めて心から確信するようになった。第一次世界大戦による死の（目を覆う）光景を通して,生きとし生けるもの全てに対する新しい愛を手に入れた。また,大部分の人間は破壊的な怒りに'はけ口'を与えるような底深い不幸にとりつかれており,本能的な喜びを（多くの人に）広めることによってのみ良い世界をもたらすことができる,と深く確信するようになった。（出典： ラッセル『自伝』第２巻第１章「第一次世界大戦」）I changed my whole conception of human nature. I became for the first time deeply convinced that Puritanism does not make for human happiness. Through the spectacle of death I acquired a new love for what is living. I became convinced that most human beings are possessed by a profound unhappiness venting itself in destructive rages, and that only through the diffusion of instinctive joy can a good world be brought into being.
