夫婦間にも必要な社会的距離
多くの夫婦は、自分の連れ合いが望んでいる快楽へのねたみから、自分の快楽の充足を差し控える。自分の快楽を多少利己的に追求することよりも、他人の快楽に反対することの方がはるかに良くない。また、夫婦間に倦怠感が生まれたり、共通の話題がなくなったりすべきでないとしたら、夫婦間にはある程度の社会的距離が必要である。もっともこの点に関しては、以前よりましな夫婦間の慣習が急速に広まりつつある。(出典： ラッセル『アメリカン・エッセイ集』のなかの「結婚」Many husbands and many wives will forgo their own pleasures out of jealousy of the pleasures that they imagine their partners as desiring. It is much more harmful to object to other people's pleasures than it is to be a trifle selfish in pursuing one's own, and a certain amount of social separateness of husband and wife is necessary if they are not to become dull and incapable of finding anything to say to each other. In this respect, however, a better convention is rapidly spreading.
