恋愛は,人間の生涯の大部分を通じて,大部分の男女が苦しんでいる孤独から逃れるための主な手段である。大部分の人には,冷たい世間や,起こりうる群衆の残虐さに対する根深い恐怖(心)がある。（また）愛情への憧れがある。それは,男性の場合には,しばしば,粗暴,粗野（がさつさ）,またはいばり散らす態度に隠されており,女性の場合には,口やかましかったり,がみがみ言ったりする態度に隠されている。相互の情熱的な愛が続いているかぎり,そういう愛は,このような感情を消滅させる。 (出典： ラッセル『結婚論』第９章「人生における恋愛の位置」It(=Love) is the principal means of escape from the loneliness which afflicts most men and women throughout the greater part of their lives.
