私たちはみな,'内向性'という病気にかかりやすい。内向的な人間は,世界の多彩なスペクタクルが目前に繰り広げられていても,顔をそむけ,心の中の空虚のみを凝視する。しかし,内向的な人間の不幸に何か偉大なものがあるなどと,想像しないことにしよう。(『ラッセル幸福論』第11章「熱意」)We are all prone to the malady of the introvert, who, with the manifold spectacle of the world spread out before him, turns away and gazes only upon the emptiness within.
