欲しいものをいくつか持っていないことこそ幸福の不可欠の一要素
特別に強い欲求を感じていない(ごく普通の欲求のみを感じる)ものを容易に入手できる人は,欲求を充足しても幸福はもたらされない,と結論する。もし,彼が哲学者気質の人であれば,人生は本質的にみじめである,なぜなら,欲しいものを何でも持っている人でも,なお不幸なのだから,と結論する。彼は,欲しいものをいくつか持っていないことこそ,幸福の不可欠の要素の一つである,ということを忘れているのである。 (『ラッセル幸福論』第２章「バイロン風不幸」)The man who acquires easily things for which he feels only a very moderate desire concludes that the attainment of desire does not bring happiness. If he is of a philosophic disposition, he concludes that human life is essentially wretched, since the man who has all he wants is still unhappy. He forgets that to be without some of the things you want is an indispensable part of happiness.
