肉体の死を越えて
親であることの喜びの原始的な源は、二重である。一方では、自分自身の肉体の一部（注：精子と卵子）が外在化し、自分の肉体の死を越えて生命を延ばしていき、そして、たぶん、今度はその一部を同じようにして外在化し、そのようにして生殖質（遺伝子）の不滅が確保されるという感情がある。他方では、権力と優しさの密接な混合がある。 (『ラッセル幸福論』第13章「家族」)The primitive root of the pleasure of parenthood is two-fold.
