I had been told that Euclid proved things, and was much disappointed that he started with axioms. At first I refused to accept them unless my brother could offer me some reason for doing so, but he said: 'If you don't accept them we cannot go on', and as I wished to go on, I reluctantly admitted them pro tem (= pro tempore). The doubt as to the premisses (premises) of mathematics which I felt at that moment remained with me, and determined the course of my subsequent work.
[私は,ユークリッドがいろいろな事柄を証明したと聞いていたが,兄が(証明なしで)公理からスタートしたので,大変失望した。最初私は,もし兄がそうする理由を説明できないならばそれらの公理を受け入れられないと言ったが,兄は,「もしお前がそれを受け入れなければ先に進むことはできない」と言った。私は数学の学習を続けたかったので,気が進まなかったが一時的に認めることとした。その時感じた数学の前提に関する疑問が私に残ることになった。(松下注：ここではユークリッド幾何学が,５つの公準＝前提から出発していることをいっている。)そうしてそれがその後の私の勉強の方向を決定した。
