* 注：岩波文庫版の安藤訳では,「・・・フットボールのようなもので訓練するよりも，多少危険で機敏さを要する★スポーツで★訓練したいのである」と訳されている。登山も小舟の操作（ラフティングなど）もスポーツではあるが、「できるだけ他人と争う形でないもの」がよいとラッセルは言っているので、「スポーツ」という言葉をここでは使わないほうがよいように思われる。
