* "for" を落とさないように要注意！* If で始まる節の中で、仮定法過去を用いると、現在の事実に反対の仮定が示される。これを受ける主節の述部では、現在の反対の帰結を示すために、助動詞の過去＋原型を用いる。（伊藤和夫『英語構文詳解』p.38の説明）
