 私は,知恵の本質はここ(この場所)と今(現在)の暴政からの可能な限りの解放(できるだけ解放されること)である,と考える。・・・世界を完全な公平さでみることのできる人はいない。即ち,もしもそれができるとすれば,その人はほとんど生き続けることができないだろう(注:なぜなら,身に迫った危険を察知できないため)。しかし,一方では、時代や場所がいくらか隔っている物事について知ったり,他方では,そのような物事に我々の感情における正当な(適切な)重みを与えたりすることによって,公平無私に絶えず近づくことが可能である。知恵の増大とは,このような公平無私への接近である。

No one can view the world with complete impartiality; and if anyone could, he would hardly be able to remain alive. But it is possible to make a continual approach towards impartiality, on the one hand, by knowing things somewhat remote in time or space, and on the other hand, by giving to such things their due weight in our feelings. It is this approach towards impartiality that constitutes growth in wisdom.

 知識はいっぱいあるが知恵や思いやりのない人間が少なくない。知恵や思いやりは短時間では育たない。日々少しずつ反省し想像や創造を働かせることによって培われる。しかし現代の教育は早期に利益を生む人間を促成栽培することが主眼となっており,政治家は国民全体の幸福よりも、国を富ませる人間にご褒美を、国に頼る貧しい人々に罰を与える政治や政策ばかりやっている。
