大部分の人は、幼少時代の迷信を'表面的に'投げ捨ててしまうと、なすべきことはそれですべてお仕舞いと考える。彼らは、こういう迷信がなおも地下に潜伏している（無意識下にひそんでいる）ことに気づいていない。合理的な確信に達したときには、その確信について十分考え、その帰結に徹底的に従い、新しい確信と矛盾するような信念が別の方法で生き残ってはいないかどうか、自分の心の中を捜してみる必要がある。
Most men, when they have thrown off superficially the superstitions of their childhood, think that there is no more to be done. They do not realise that these superstitions are still lurking underground. When a rational conviction has been arrived at, it is necessary to dwell upon it, to follow out its consequences, to search out in oneself whatever beliefs inconsistent with the new conviction might otherwise survive.

某首相は矛盾したことを頻繁に言ってもあまり意に介しないようだが,やはりほっておかないで,よくよく整理して考え,矛盾を早めに解消しておいたほうがよいと思われる。矛盾した言動をしても，注意をできる人はほとんどいないようであり，裸の王様はいつ自分が裸だと気がつくのか？
