The golden mean is an uninteresting doctrine, and I can remember when I was young rejecting it with scorn and indignation, since in those days it was heroic extremes that I admired. Truth is not always interesting, and many things are believed because they are interesting; although, in fact, there is little other evidence in their favour.

人の噂などというものは頼りない・いいかげんなものであり,多くの場合,間違っている。しかし人は,自分の場合だったら憤慨するようなことも,他人のことの場合は「ありえる」と思ってしまいがち。お互い,人（他人）の噂話は,疑ってかかった方が安全である。噂話の対象が,敵・嫌いな相手であれ,味方・好きな相手であれ・・・。
