観察者は, 自分では石を観察していると思っている時, 実際は －物理学を信ずべきとすれば－ 彼自身に対する石の影響を観察しているのである。そうだとすると,科学は,それ自身と戦っているように思われる。つまり,科学は,最大限客観的であろうとする時,意に反して主観に陥ってしまっていることがわかる。素朴実在論から物理学が導かれるが,その物理学に従って考えると,物理学が真なら,素朴実在論は偽だということになる。すると,素朴実在論は,それが真であるなら,同時にそれは偽であるような代物ということになるので,結局,素朴実在論は偽である。
The observer, when he seems to himself to be observing a stone, is really, if physics is to be believed, observing the effects of the stone upon himself. Thus science seems to be at war with itself: when it most means to be objective, it finds itself plunged into subjectivity against its will. Naive realism leads to physics, and physics, if true, shows that naive realism is false. Therefore naive realism, if true, is false; therefore it is false. And therefore the behaviourist, when he thinks he is recording observations about the outer world, is really recording observations about what is happening in him.

「外的世界について（の）観察を（客観的に）記録していると思っていても,実は,自分自身の中で起っていることを記録している」。つまり、「観察者は, 自分では石を観察していると思っている時, 実際は －物理学を信ずべきとすれば－ 彼自身に対する石の影響を観察しているのである。」
いや、一人の人間の観察ではなく、非常に多くの人間の観察によっている、と反論する人がいるかも知れない。しかし、その場合でも、やはり、（たとえば、人間よりもっと高等な宇宙人への効果＝観察ではなく）、人間に対する効果に基礎をおいていることには代わりはない。
人間の五感がまったく関与しない「客観的な」科学とは何か！？ そんなものがあるのだろうか？
