一九五一年十二月,「狂信への最良の解答――自由主義」という論文の末尾に,'古い「十戒」を廃棄する意図からではなく,ただ補足し,広めたい意味から',「自由人たる精髄」として,次の十項目を発表した。
一,何事も絶対確実だと思い込んではいけない。〔この世に絶対確実なことなどありえないからだ。〕
（注：ネット上では,「どんなことでも,これでよいと思ってはいけない」と誤訳している例が多い）
二,何事も証拠を隠してまでして,物事を運ぶ価値があると考えてはいけない。なぜなら,そういた証拠は必ず明るみに出るものだからだ。
Perhaps the essence of the Liberal outlook could be summed up in a new decalogue, not intended to replace the old one but only to supplement it. The Ten Commandments that, as a teacher, I should wish to promulgate, might be set forth as follows:
1. Do not feel absolutely certain of anything.
2. Do not think it worth while to proceed by concealing evidence, for the evidence is sure to come to light.
