What led me to write about ethics was the accusation frequently brought against me that, while I had made a more or less sceptical inquiry into other branches of knowledge, I had avoided the subject of ethics except in an early essay expounding Moore's Principia Ethica. My reply is that ethics is not a branch of knowledge. I now, therefore, set about the task in a different way.
